When I originally started writing Jack of Harts, I had in mind a fractured United States that still mostly stuck together when the going got rough. The whole idea of not really liking each other, but disliking the other guys a lot more. One of the earliest scenes where I revealed this included a Texas flag above a United States flag on an American warship. Absolutely against any flag code of today, but considered normal in the time of Jack. I didn\u2019t really explain anymore than that. I don\u2019t want to have walls of text explaining the politics of Jack, so I left it that and went on. Just a clue to the reader that this is not today\u2019s America.
