Not once but multiple times. And then we left and we never went back.

We’ve gone into orbit. We sent probes out, but the most distant ones, the only ones that have gone beyond our solar system, were launched before I knew about them. The ones checking out our planets have been few and far between and mostly routine. For the ones that sing happy birthday to themselves, they are awesome and I love them, but they are small ball in the end.

I’ve grown up and seen the end of the Space Shuttle program. I’ve seen the end of the United States even being able to go into space. I’ve seen people forget about space.

I’ve seen us go back to space again in the last decade. And this week I saw us go back to the Moon. With plans to go back again, and then to go to Mars.

I don’t know if we’ll make it. The looters are doing everything they can to destroy civilization before we can make it, but for the first time in a long time, I have hope that we will see other worlds and step on them with our own two feet in real life, not just in fiction. This moonshot is what I’ve waited my whole life to see. It’s what I’ve hoped to see. The future of our race.

We must slip the bonds of Earth and go elsewhere. Build elsewhere. Or we are one cosmic asteroid away from going the way of the dinosaur. This is a step towards doing that.

From the Earth to the Moon to Mars and to the stars. That is what we must do if we wish the human race to survive.

All my life, I have grown up knowing that we went to the Moon and came back to Earth.
