And I understand some of the negative thoughts on it.

I would say two things about it. There were at least two movies in it. An over the top kids movie. And a serious movie for adults. And those movies were not seamlessly put together in the theatrical cut in the same way Shrek was. It feels to me like they weren’t sure what movie they wanted to make and tried to assemble everything into one in the end but it doesn’t fully mesh.

The good parts were: Man, when they went with it, they really went with it. They gave He-Man the power of a god and he just wanted to be Prince Adam.
They had some amazing actors. And I swear I did not see who was playing Man at Arms until the credits and I suddenly realized it was HIM. It is a dang fine actor that does that to me.
Leto does was Leto always does. He committed to the role of Skeletor and man he did not play it light. He leaned into it in a way that was the perfect mix of over-the top kid villain and true evil for this kind of movie.

Some of the humor was very juvenile. Some of the writing and themes were darn near classical.
They play the Masters of the Universe straight and even find a way to give them the ridiculous toy names from the 1980s in a way that makes sense. Ridiculous sense, tongue in cheek sense, and even a bit of out of this world we’re all going to die so let’s lean into it sense. The film laughs at the characters, and it shows them standing up as true heroes. And it really does give us true heroes. Big Damn Heroes even. And it gives us a satisfying story with closure that also sets things up for other movies. And you must wait for all of the credits scene. The opening credits, the mid credits, and the after-the-credits scene. They are all pretty awesome.

In the end, the movie worked for me. I was a He-Man kid though, so I went in looking for He-Man and the Masters of the Universe and that is what I got. Some juvenile whimsy. Some adult classical story beats. And some Big Damn Heroes to cheer for.

P.S. – I will agree with the people who say there were cowards putting this film together. There is a joke that screamed to be made. Prince Adam looking at Skeletor and shaking his head. “I work in HR. You have no idea what true evil is.” I don’t know if that scene was filmed. If it wasn’t filmed, someone was either a coward or an idiot. And if it was filmed, someone was too much of a coward to put it in the final cut.

I watched Masters of the Universe this weekend and I loved it.
