I said last week that I was going to start clearing out my mom’s stuff from her bedroom. I could not. Every time I went into her room, I just froze. I feel almost like a trespasser in her house, and throwing her things away is like throwing her away. I know it’s not true, but it’s how it feels. A friend came over on Saturday and helped me by standing and talking as I pulled out some shoes for donations to charity. It’s a small thing, but also a big thing. Just being there and talking so I can cut through the static and actually do what I needed to do. Which of course is the one thing I never wanted to do.
Dawn DeMarco and Jesse James traveled from Alpha Centauri to Sunnydale during their multiyear campaign to send every War profiteer they could find straight to prison. They and their misfits caught dozens of well-connected conmen who thought they were above the law, and proved that they were not again and again. And in so doing they liberated more money than I can count, especially during the final months leading up to the Hyades Cluster invasion. They finished their whirlwind tour of the party scene mere days before we kicked that campaign off, and it was good to have them back if I’m being honest. My command felt a little light with them flitting around arresting bad guys. But it was a worthy cause. And Dawn made up for it when she arrived.
If there was ever anyone who loved parties, it was Dawn DeMarco. She grew up on a colony world devoted to hosting the best formal balls, and her family had been at the pinnacle of that constant contest between Great Families. Her name could open the most prestigious doors, even when the events were closed to outsiders. And someone with her pedigree was never an outsider. Families all over known space would kill, or at least seriously maim an expendable minion, to get an attendee like her in their home, and she could bring as many plus ones as she wanted. Jesse was almost always one of those plus ones, and she became very diligent at making certain he enjoyed them.
They want you to be stupid. They want you to be mad. They want you to do illegal things. They want you to use threatening language, or to act threatening. They want you to listen to Ray Epps and the other shouters like him who riled up the crowds on January 5 and January 6. They want to you to do something that they can arrest you for. They want to put you in prison. Ray Epps and the other shouters haven’t been arrested, but those who followed their orders are still in jail today. Even some who didn’t follow the orders and simply stood outside the Capital are in prison today. They want to use you as a political weapon against other Americans, and they will try to rile you up until you do something stupid that they can do that with. They are trying to destroy their political opposition. Don’t be stupid. Don’t let anger control you. Don’t fall into the trap. Be careful. Be watchful. Be smart.
I said yesterday that there would be more. And there has been more. The FBI attorney that forged a document to use as probable cause before a court to get a surveillance warrant on an American citizen of the opposing political party has had their good standing restored by the DC court bar. He is a convicted felon and he can practice law again. He can bring evidence before the court against other American citizens in the future. You see, they can act badly, and their system will protect them from the consequences of their actions. Because if they act badly in support of their system, they can be trusted to do so again in the future. This is the nature of our political warfare right now. They will lie in court to destroy the reputations and lives of American citizens. And when caught, when convicted of doing so in a court of law, they will be brought back into the fold so they can do it again. There will be more of this.
