In 1492, Columbus sailed the ocean blue.

Europe was rising out of the ashes of the fall of the Roman Empire to the Muslim invasions that conquered three quarters of the known world.

Spain had finally liberated the Iberian peninsula from centuries of Muslim occupation.

New technologies and new economies saw everything from printing presses to more advanced sea faring vessels to better guns, and everything in between.

And in 1492, Columbus sailed to India. Where he met Indians. Well… he got halfway there at least. He opened up the New World to European colonies and people who grew up in the New World called themselves Columbians for centuries. He was one footstep towards the eventual creation of the United States of America.

So Happy Columbus Day.
