My family supported Prohibition for purely economic reasons. We owned major interests in oil companies which created fuel for the rapidly expanding automobile market. Our primary competitor in automotive fuel was the alcohol that most farmers created in their back rooms. Prohibition erased that competition and forced an entire nation to buy our product. We made a fortune on that law alone.
