I hear some people preach that we are all bad and that we’re here to suffer so that we might enjoy Heaven better.  Well, I don’t believe in that suffering business.  Oh, I want to go to Heaven when the time comes.  It’s got a real good party going on.  But I don’t want to go now.  I’ve got a lot of things to do until the time comes.  I’ve got a lot of things to see.  I intend to slide in with a lot of stuff to talk about with all the friends I made along the way.

Hello, my name is Betty

When we grow up, we absorb many deep and abiding truths from our parents.  Their values and beliefs infuse us, dominate us for the rest of our lives.  But sometimes something happens to change everything for us.  We learn that everything we thought we knew was wrong.  Some people lose faith in life and stop living when that happens.  Most of us though, we live on.  We find something else to believe in, and that faith we take to the end of our days.

Hello, my name is Charles

I was born Charles Edward Hurst.  I expect you recognize the name.  I have no doubt I would have lived down to it given the impulses of my youth.  But the Shang came, and I volunteered.  My father made certain that I was assigned to a second string reserve unit that would surely never see combat.  Ah, the fickle hand of fate.  That is how I became a Cowboy.  That is how I met Dorothy.  And that has made all the difference.

A lot of us put our boots on when the Shang came.  We grabbed our rifles and we went to battle.  We came home to a heroes welcome.  I kept my rifle.  I kept my ship.  I kept my boots.  They aren’t the same boots of course.  I’ve replaced them over the years.  But I still wear ’em.  I still stand up to do what needs doin’.  I intend to die with my boots on.  Unless I’m with a blonde, a brunette, and a redhead of course.  That’s a no boot zone right there.

The end of the growing season has come, the beginning of a new season begun.  Celebrate life in its splendor.  Prepare for the cold to come.  Build the bonfires high.  Sing and dance and love.  Remember those who have gone on before you.  Winter has come.
