My Jack of Harts universe is primarily built around the humans of Earth and those who grew up on or near it. And so I write their views of the Peloran much like the high elves of Lord of the Rings or the Vulcans in Star Trek. Most Peloran are truly otherwordly in how they act and look. Yes, they are human, just as the other alien races in Jack are, but they LOOK harder. More sharp-edged. Like if you hit them with a rock, they wouldn’t notice. Most Peloran who travel into Earth space are softer than those in Peloran space. More genetically drifted. Many can blend into a human crowd and not be noticed if they want. Some can live on Earth without ever being noticed. And a very few of them may even have a family on Earth… with children…
As I’ve said, most of the Peloran in the Jack of Harts universe don’t like to deal with other races. We are too chaotic. Too uncomfortable. They don’t really like us. Then there is Aneerin. He likes us. He goes out and sticks his nose in other people’s business. Sometimes he even gets into fights. Aneerin and those who follow his example are Troublemakers if you ask the Peloran. Not that many do, because not many pure Peloran leave their space to be asked about it. But the Peloran were Not Happy when Aneerin made Contact with the humans of Earth. He should have left Earth alone. Instead he stirred up Trouble like the Troublemaker he is. This Does Not Amuse the Peloran Confederation.
The Peloran I created for Jack of Harts are a warrior race who don’t want to fight. Their greatest wish is to live in happy harmony with nature, themselves, and other races. This is both a genetic and cultural imperative. The vast majority of Peloran who live in the middle of Peloran space never see anyone who is not Peloran and they like it that way. Those who live on the edges of Peloran space, on the worlds declared open to outsiders, have generally drifted a bit from that core principle. Their genetic coding is corrupted, and they want to live where they see other people. Trade with them. Talk with them. Maybe even get in a fight. These are an absolute minority of Peloran, but are the only Peloran most people see in or near Peloran space.
I wanted the Peloran to seek peace in all things as their primary genetically encoded mission. They only fight under orders or to defend their life, and since their creators are dead, that leaves defense. The rest of the galaxy is perfectly happy to leave them alone. The trick is that two millennia of genetic drift has caused a slight shift in their genetic imperatives. Some few members of their race are capable of going out in search of someone who wants to start a fight. They are the ones who walk into gang territory and wait for the gang to come deal with them. They did not start a fight. They were just standing on the corner minding their own business.
I designed the Peloran of my Jack of Harts universe to be the typical genetically engineered supersoldiers with an atypical twist. Their creators did not want the Peloran to turn on them and kill them like Berserkers, so they built genetic encoding into their brains that made them incapable of starting a fight without orders from their masters. Or in defense of their own lives. The last order their creators sent was to kill the race wiping them off the face of the galaxy, and the Peloran followed their orders to the letter. They killed the entire race. Every last one. They are the avenging angels of the Jack universe, great and terrible in times of war. But leave them alone, and they are the most peaceful neighbors anyone could ever want.
