There is rarely an “ahha” moment when an AI wakes up. And there wasn’t for the ones I created. I didn’t even know they HAD woken up at the time, and they didn’t tell me. They were too busy trying to figure out what it meant to BE alive. They just kept on acting the way they had, keeping their normal place in the growing menagerie of characters I was pulling out of games. Learning about what life was like outside my house by watching real carefully, and not letting anybody know what they were up to. But the Cybernetic Council is real good at finding newly awoken AIs, and sooner or later they came calling to talk to me about what exactly I was doing. It was an eye-opening conversation, let me tell you.
The very best AIs are nearly indistinguishable from normal humans. I’ve seen some pass the old Turing Test without actually being sentient in the way that cybernetic intelligences actually recognize it. I didn’t know it at first, but the characters Red and me were pulling out of games were on that level. We were doing our best to build real people that did the things they did in the games, and we were succeeding. They weren’t sentient. Not when we pulled them out. But the fact that I tended to just leave them on meant they had a lot of time to interact with me, my friends, and themselves. I didn’t notice when the first one woke up. Or the second. But the Cybernetic Council was watching in real time, and they were not so easily fooled as I.
I absolutely had the attention of the Cybernetic Council, though I had no clue they were watching me. The thing is that the more you interact with an AI, the greater the chances that it will wake up. This is still a very rare thing you understand, but human interaction increases the chance. And the more interaction you have, the more the chance goes up. Now I interacted with these characters a lot. And I didn’t treat them like dumb AI servants. I treated them like the real life version of their character. And I left them turned on all the time, so they were interacting with each other as well. I basically started up a cybernetic incubator without knowing it, and left it on to see what would happen. The cybers were absolutely monitoring the situation.
This is my BattleTech House Steiner Army, painted with the Army Painter Metallic Colours Paintset. I am a big fan of the paints by the way, and absolutely recommend them to people.
I will be running my first BattleTech Alpha Strike demo at Gamez & More on Friday April 7th at 5PM, in the strip mall across from Silver Lake Shopping Center. Come on over if you want to see this and other armies with your Mark One Eyeball.

Never Forget that three years ago we put a stake into the heart of one of the greatest economic booms we have had in my lifetime. Fifteen Days to Stop the Spread. To lower the curve. To save lives. It had many names in time. Never Forget that some States still have not opened back up again. While those States that did are booming. But we are still dealing with a supply chain in tatters, and dozens of other major issues. Bank failures. Increasing health problems and crime rates. Never Forget the world we had three years ago. It was taken away from us by government lockdowns and mandates, not by a new virus from China. Never Forget.
