China’s four-child policy made the Hyades into one of the most densely populated regions of space when The War came upon us all. It gave them a population and industrial base that was terrifyingly capable, and made it a target that had to be neutralized if we were to have any chance of winning. The interesting part is that it was the very population derived from that four-child policy that made it possible for us to govern the worlds we captured. Most of them were lower castes, sent out of China so the home nation could be ethnically pure. They were conditioned from birth to do what the Han businessmen who ruled the cluster told them to do. We just had to adjust our tactics to their needs.
The Weather Service doesn’t actually make weather you know. If it did, the Americas would be a lot warmer now. They can do little things with local weather, but full-scale climate adjustments on a continental scale are beyond what we can do. Well, I’ve seen the results of doing that and it does work. It can also go horribly wrong, and I’ve seen that too. Planetary climates don’t always enjoy being tinkered with. That’s why the United States Weather Service is more concerned with cleaning up bad air, starting rain showers where they are needed, and suppressing major storm fronts where possible.
The Muslim faith has been divided since Mohammed died. Some say the divisions began even before, but it was his death that made those divisions crystal clear. There was disagreement over who should lead Islam after that, and it lead to bloodshed. As the years passed into decades and then centuries the Sunni and the Shia never forgot the treachery that divided them. The Islamic State of Detroit was supposed to be a new beginning for Islam, a place where anyone who followed Mohammed could live in peace. The news media trumpeted that unity until the very end, after the real life Twilight began leaking the real news onto the networks.

With the Sixth Millennium of Chinese history rapidly approaching, the People’s Republic of China was exceedingly busy building new war machines, and upgrading older ones to fight alongside the new designs. Their largest handicap was that modern Western Alliance designs were beginning to outpace the more rugged and dependable Chinese combat units. Their commanders were learning to use the aging DT-13’s relatively slow speed against it for instance, by slipping fast-moving cavalry mech platoons in to perform quick strikes before Chinese armored formations could respond.
New mech production was accelerating as a result of the Sixth Millennium upgrade program, but the Chinese Army still found itself consistently outgunned, outmaneuvered, and short of the necessary gear for its garrison and regular armor divisions, especially in the Hyades cluster. As a result, Army commanders requested a new vehicle for its troops that could be produced quickly and effectively while offering great anti-mech and armor firepower. Many Chinese companies vied for the right to build this new vehicle, and there are rumors even now of particularly vicious backroom, or bedroom, bloodletting over the contract.
Shanghai-based Tiger Design Corp won the design contest with an inspiringly successful tank that based much of its cost savings on recycling existing equipment. Stripping away the turret assembly from the old Hippo-class IFVs, Tiger engineers placed a fixed casemate mounting the HP-15 Wolf Fang cannons that were in excess capacity from Iron Rider production lines. They then added several centimeters of armor to each facing and twin anti-infantry miniguns. The most advanced systems added to the design were the gravplates that gave it limited flight outside of combat, and a modern Eclipse electronic warfare system that was used much more often to end the careers of countless Western Alliance mech jocks.
The Yingbao Multi-Purpose Anti-Armor Vehicle, named the Shadow Panther Tank Destroyer by Western Alliance Consolidated Intelligence, was quickly nicknamed the Beetle by Alliance troops for its resemblance to the old Earth Volkswagen ground car. Whatever names they went by, the small Panthers quickly became as popular with the Chinese as they were unwelcomed by Alliance troops due to their ability to hit hard and stay hidden with their long-ranged cannons, electronic countermeasures, and low stature. They were one of the most common opponents faced during the invasion of the Hyades Cluster where the old Hippo had been heavily deployed to manage the Chinese citizens before The War. They are found even now throughout Terran space in the hands of militia or corporate forces where they are cheap but effective defense units.
The Hyades Cluster was far away from Earth when the Chinese first settled it. The businessmen who colonized it were some of the smartest and forward thinking of an entire nation of four billion people. They aggressively recruited the best and brightest of their people to rule the cluster, and shipped out the hardiest of the lower castes to do the work that needed doing in job lots. Their enforced four child policy made the Hyades the single most populated region of space when The War began. And they poured unimaginable amounts of wealth into building up the cluster’s defenses. I used to wonder how we ever made them agree to give that up to secure War’s End. Now that I know I wish I did not.
