I know the guy who flew that scout into Betelgeuse by the way. He wore a cowboy hat during The War. Still does in fact. He learned to like it too. He’s Ageless like me. Took the Peloran Treatments back before he left and was starting to manifest some of the traits on the way out. The faster reflexes turned out to be real important when the birds started shooting. He saved a lot of lives that day. He also kept us from getting into an interstellar war.
Dixie got her nickname when she responded to a major drug cartel land grab in the Odessa area. They had besieged Taurian Arms, a major arms manufacturer even back then, but the majority of the Texas Guard was down on the border engaging other cartels. Dixie sent her refitted tanks and other drones to relieve the defenders, wiped out the entire cartel, and killed their leader. That was the first time anybody called her Dixie the Drug Lord Slayer.
The Ottoman “rebels” drove the Greek invaders all the way back to the shores of the border between Asia and Europe where Constantinople resided. The British defended the city for the official Ottoman government but declined to fight in support of the shattered Greek army. They did negotiate with the rebels though, securing time and permission for the Greeks to cross the straights. Then it was time for everybody to come to the peace table.
Our scout ship to Betelgeuse had few weapons, and the local weaponry hopelessly outclassed those she did have. They fired first of course, and they got a few good licks in on our scout ship. Then she used her Peloran gravity generators to bring her effective mass to near zero and lit up her main drives. Betelgeuse had never seen a ship accelerate so fast and their guns simply couldn’t track her. It took a brave captain to slow back down and talk after that.
Dixie’s Texas Tech-built drones mostly consisted of civilian vehicles upgunned to deal with the drug cartels. A very few were actual combat designs, though the M1A5 Abrams seen in the show and movies were never part of Dixie’s arsenal. In real life her students “recovered” some decommissioned M60 Pattons, which proved very effective against the drug cartels’ armored vehicles. They earned her the nickname that most people know her by in fact.
