France was a nation in chaos following the Paris Bombings. The government had lost the trust of the people. Islamic activists enforced Sharia Law in their expanding enclaves. Las Vegas odds were 2 to 1 in favor of France falling altogether. Then Prince Napoleon flew into Charles de Gaulle International Airport, smiled to the cameras, and said that France’s best days were not behind her. It was a masterful performance, recorded for future French school children to see every year on the anniversary of the return of the House of Bonaparte. It was what a desperate people needed to believe.
I know I’ve got a reputation for butting my nose into things that don’t concern me, but that’s usually the guys I didn’t kill spouting their mouths off. Think about that for a moment, will you? They should be happy they didn’t try to hurt me or mine. I don’t like people threatening my family. It’s me or them you see. Do or die. I don’t run, and I don’t go down without a fight. There is nothing I won’t do to protect my family. I’ll kill for them. I’ll die for them. No second thoughts.
Dixie first met Twilight during the Second Great Depression when Mexican drug lords were trying to take over Mexico and the American South West. It took her five weeks to track down the Rogue AI ravaging the networks on both sides of the old border. She had a kill order from the highest levels of the American cybernetic warfare division. She talked instead. Welcomed her like a long-lost sister and then walked away. Twilight had never had a sister before. She was intrigued.
Prince Napoleon of the House of Bonaparte had a name that reminded the French of times when they had ruled the world. He was a successful man, over sixty years old though he did not look it. A name like that in the banking industry allowed him access to the best age defying medicines and treatments, and New York City of the Twenty First Century had many of those. He was married to a beautiful wife and had several successful children with their own careers and families. His smile made people want to trust him. He was an amazing politician.
I’ve fought a lot of people over time, killed more than I’d care to remember. I’d like to think that I measure my responses to the threats. I don’t shoot someone for mouthing off to me and stuff. And if I’m being honest, I killed a lot more people during The War than I’ve ever killed since. I’ve just been a bit more targeted in my choices. It was a lot simpler when any Shang ship was a target. Now I have to pick my battles. And if you think I’m always looking for a fight, you should see the battles I didn’t pick.
