Today is Good Friday. Today billions of people remember the death of Jesus. Some celebrate it. Others use the word remembrance. Jesus came in saying things the religious rulers of the day didn’t like, so they cancelled him all the way. They called up a paid mob to protest and demand his head, and the civic ruler bowed to their demands and sent him to be tortured and hung on a Roman cross until he was very dead. He wasn’t the first person killed by the rulers of the day because they did not like what he said, and he wasn’t the last, but he is the one who is most remembered. Because his disciples spread his story and teachings far and wide. And most of them were killed as well. Christians have known since the very beginning that saying things the rulers don’t like can be very unhealthy. And yet they continued to speak.
