Those of us who appreciate the world we live in celebrate the accomplishments of those who helped make it. Columbus is one of those people. He lived in a world recovering from a Mongol invasion and a Black Plague that killed a third of the population. And THEY were recovering from a total collapse of the Roman Empire amidst a Muslim invasion that conquered three-quarters of the Western world. Columbus grew up in an era when Christendom was liberating Spain from the long occupation, and was looking to liberate the Holy Land. And so in 1492, Columbus sailed the ocean blue in search of gold to finance just such an effort. He found America on that trip. A New World that Europe would colonize and make into the world we live in now. Happy Columbus Day. Belated.
