The New England Federation Starfleet boasts starship commanders from every race, creed, sex, or family, and they are very proud of that. The flag ranks are far more selective though. Nearly every Commodore or Admiral in Starfleet has a Great Family name behind them. This is no accident. The Great Families have poured a great deal of resources into making Starfleet the most advanced and most powerful fleet in America and the Western Alliance, and they make certain it looks out for their interests in return. Nearly every battleship or carrier, every fleet, and every starbase is commanded by a member of the Great Families. And the competition between Great Families to fill those positions is intense. Any failure can result in a new opportunity for someone else.
