Some people say now is the time for unity. To find a way to work together. That we speak to each other about finding a better solution. But the problem with that idea is that we’ve been trying to do that. We have been talking. Charlie Kirk was one of the foremost people talking. And they killed him because he said things they hated. And after he was shot dead, they went online to celebrate and cheer that he had been shot for daring to say things they hated. Telling all of us that they will cheer just as much after they shoot us as well.

I grew up in various Pentecostal and Evangelical churches that taught me to expect this. I’m not surprised that they hate us because I grew up reading the Bible where it says they will hate us. And while I wasn’t taught a lot of Catholic Doctrine, I do remember being taught about the Seven Deadly Sins and told giving in to them corrupted us. Made us worse people. That part of growing up straight and upright men and women of honor meant we had to fight them, not embrace them. Not celebrate them.

Lust. Gluttony. Greed. Sloth. Wrath. Envy. Pride

These are sins, and we should rebuke them. But Leftist Democrats have told us for years to embrace them. They want us addicted to porn and sex. America today eats more and is fatter than ever before, but they tell us that beauty comes in every size. They say that people should be able to steal things without being punished. They teach hatred of people based on the color of their skin. They teach that people should be envious of the things other people have and just take them. And I’m sure I’ve seen the word pride thrown around. It’s on the tip of my tongue… Whatever it is, the religious right has largely been taught to stand against these things most of our lives, which is why we generally stand opposed to them.

The people in the center and center-left haven’t, and often thing we’re a bit odd for that. But what they’ve seen in the last week has shocked most of them as well. They see the celebrations and the cheering at a man’s assassination and they are in many ways more appalled than we are. We expected it, so it didn’t surprise us. They are friends with people who are saying it. They work with people who say it. And they’re aghast. Because even those not looking for it recognize evil when it jumps up and down and screams in their faces.

I assert that there can be no unity with people who celebrate assassination and say people deserve to be shot because they say things these people hate. Sooner or later, everyone gets shot that way.

The only choices we really have are to embrace evil and let it command us, or rebuke evil and fight it. I say the only choice that will give our children a better life than the one we had is to rebuke the evil and make it clear that we are rebuking it and will not let it dominate us.

So I rebuke it. I call it evil and I rebuke evil.
