William Carter
Captain William Carter has been a captain of the American military since back when the men elected their own unit captains. He was the son of a moderately wealthy merchant and graduate of Yale College who spoke multiple languages, making him one of the most common types of young captains in his day.
Then he crossed the Delaware River on Christmas to go deal with some troublesome Hessian mercenaries. A Hessian vampire found him, bit him, and his life changed forever. He didn’t turn, to what he ascribes to Divine protection. But he gained great strength and resilience from it, as well as an increased sensitivity to the veil between the worlds that separates our own natural world from other realities that most minds are not meant to see. He was rather quickly recruited by Benjamin Franklin to join the Colonial Monster Hunters, and has continued in that role ever since.
As a Hunter of Otherworldly Beings and Threats to Mankind, he has found out in time that he does not age anymore. He will be the same 25 or 30 years old that he is now until the day he dies, or whatever it is fades. Whether he is a Texas Ranger in the 1870s, or in 1992, Captain William Carter is the man who walks into a situation and deals with it before walking back off stage so the world can continue. So the reader can get a taste of what the world was that he just saved a piece of. That is what I seek to write.
