William Carter
Captain William Carter does not know why he does not age. I do. I know exactly why. He knows he was bitten by some form of vampire but he is not one. He can hold and wear silver, walk around under the sun, and he eats normal food. But he no longer ages and he is stronger and faster than he was and doesn’t know why. He ascribes it to Divine protection, but that does not mean he understands it. He only understands that it puts him in a position to help people in need. And so he does.
He fights otherworldly creatures in the Colonies, and then the mountains to the west, and then the river valleys and great grassy deserts to the west of that. He rides with the Texas Ranger Company when it is first formed under the new Mexican government, always seeking to help stabilize or remove the otherworldly threats that would hurt people who do not know how to survive them. He goes all the way to California, and then back across the continent to the East Coast and back to the middle. Always moving. Always seeking new threats that need to be dealt with. He is not the only one of his kind. Others like him do the same marches across the young, expanding nation as the years go by. They are not great in number, but there are a number of them. Fellows recruited over the years, some by him, some by others.
They are the guardians of a young nation and a young people in a land of old enemies and older grudges.
