The Gothic Church stands sentinel over the New Haven Green in 1839, its gargoyles hidden from most eyes. Captain William Carter returns home for the Center Church on the Green’s bicentennial and sees the stone guardians for the first time in his life. The discovery draws him northward along new roads over old paths to the Sleeping Giant, where ancient Indian legends still endure. There “The Veiled Guardians” will either carve their eternal purpose in stone or crumble to dust.
