Remember Ashli Babbitt

We as a nation remembered the January 6 protest last week. Four protestors died that day, and we have seen one of those deaths on camera. The unarmed Air Force veteran Ashli Babbitt was part of a crowd that entered the Capitol and was going up a stairwell towards a line of three Capitol Police guarding a door into the inner workings of the building. This would setup one of the most famous scenes of the day, one that most of us have seen on the news due to the nature of the recording and the fact that it was quickly sold to two of the major networks.

John Sullivan is a self-proclaimed activist and journalist who took part in many BLM and antifa protests during 2020. After exhorting the crowd to enter the Capitol, he moved up the staircase to where he could cover the blocked door. He shouted at the police guarding it to get out of the way, and they stepped aside so the crowd could approach the door before walking down the stairs. A number of protestors tried to breach the unguarded door, and the window next to it. Ashli Babbitt began crawling through the shattered window when another Capitol Policeman on the other side of the door shot her in the neck and killed her. The Capitol Police walked back up the stairs to secure the scene in seconds and Ashli Babbitt’s body was carried out of the Capitol.

This year, Ashli Babbitt’s mother came to the Capitol to remember her daughter’s killing. She planned to place flowers as close as she could get to the Capitol, but it appears as if remembering those killed by the Capitol Police on or near Capitol grounds is frowned upon by the Capitol Police. They arrested Ashli Babbitt’s mother in front of cameras and took her to jail. She is according to the last report I have seen being charged with jaywalking. I would bid you all to remember Ashli Babbitt, her husband, her mother, and the rest of her family as they continue to live through the repercussions of her killing and everything around it.

Rosalie and Rosalind

Rosalie could pass every military physical with her hands and legs tied behind her back. Trust me. We used to tie each other up all the time back before The War just to show off for the citidiots. Now Rosalind’s robotic avatar was built with all the best cybernetic tricks, and could lift trucks without breaking a sweat. The two of them combined were unbelievable. That’s why they postponed their plans to start a gengineering clinic and volunteered to fight. Rosalie wanted to fly starfighters, and Rosalind was happy to be one. They really made the perfect fighter and pilot team since they already knew everything that made each other tick. And they were the smartest girls I knew from the start. Passing all the tests was easy-peasy for them.

Rosalie and Rosalind

There was a lot of hugging when Rosalie woke up. A lot of crying. There were some rather deep questions. And Rosalie soon realized that the cybernetic Rosalind filled the great, big, gapping hole torn into her soul by the death of her sister. She was just the right shape. The right size. The right person. Rosalie never forgot that her sister died to save her. But she had to truly believe on a visceral level that the new Rosalind WAS her sister if she were to come back. No doubts. No regrets. No backsies. That is why they celebrate their reunion day every year. It’s basically a second birthday party for them, and I do my best to make it every year. And I always send a card, just in case something comes up.

January 6

Hundreds of thousands of people went to Washington DC to protest against election fraud two years ago. Many marched to the Capitol after Trump’s speech, where he told them to be peaceful. Once they arrived, prepared individuals with bullhorns ordered the crowd to enter the Capitol. Some entered through doors opened by the Capitol Police. Others remained outside. The Capitol Police fired gas and flashbang rounds into other parts of the crowd. Some police used clubs, and in one case caught on camera a firearm was used. Four protestors died that day. January 6 is a wound to our nation that festers to this day.

Hundreds of protestors have been arrested in the years since January 6. Many have been placed in a political prison set aside for them, denied bail, denied due process, and denied speedy trials. The prisoners report being beaten, one so badly he lost an eye. Being denied heat when it is cold, air conditioning when hot, and religious services when requested. Being placed in solitary confinement for 23 hours a day, often because they talked to their lawyer. Some have committed suicide due to their treatment. Those who have seen trial were denied a venue change by Washington DC judges, convicted by DC jurors, and DC judges handed down prison times far exceeding the standards for those offenses.

We still don’t know the names of everyone who initiated the violence on January 6. The few we do know are free today, most without any charges at all laid on them. We need the camera footage, the body cam footage, all the proof of what happened that day. We need to charge everyone who initiated violence, and everyone who called on others to commit that violence. Peaceful protestors who didn’t break anything should go home. Those charged with crimes should get fair trials outside DC, where it is increasing clear that fair trials are hard to get. We must to seek justice for all, or the wounds of January 6 will only get worse in the years to come.
