Jack of Harts

If you are a gamer, you probably have The Campaign. The one big game you either have played or want to play all your life. For me that is the Human Sphere, a BattleTech campaign that counts the Chaos March as the last fully canon BattleTech sourcebook and moves forward into an alternate Jihad and an alternate campaign setting specifically designed to support small unit actions between the two or three dozen major factions. For my gamer friend John, it is just The Campaign. An alternate BattleTech campaign setting specifically designed to support small unit actions between the half dozen Inner Sphere factions. I played in his campaign many many moons ago. Whelp. Now I’m doing it again. And I’m even painting mechs for it again. Yeah. It’s that serious.

There are still drones flying around New Jersey, and many reports say they are moving in packs. Formations. And we still don’t know what is going on. The governments says they don’t know who it is. Or that they are manned aircraft that people are just seeing wrong. Or that they are routine drone traffic from approved companies. But they continue to not tell us what they know, assuming they know anything. And I don’t know which worries me more. The idea that they know and won’t tell us. Or the idea that they don’t know and won’t tell us. Both are a reflection of the dysfunction endemic in the government, especially over the last four years. Both ideas worry me. Again and again over the last four years, we’ve seen local people on the ground say that something odd is going on, we’ve seen the government say nothing odd is going on, and a few months later we find out they always knew something odd was going on and didn’t tell us. I do not like that at all.

I’m reading Toll of Honor by David Weber right now and I think it is one of the most interesting books I have ever read. It is a side novel of a much larger series that is a fully self contained book. It has been years since my last run through the series, but Toll of Honor tells a fresh story and includes everything needed to understand what is going on. It is a fresh look at an old story with its own new story that stands on its own feet. I am amazed at how well it was written to do all of that. If you have ever liked anything David Weber has put out, check this out. It is worth your time.
