The Ethiopian cruiser Kesaté Birhan was one of many ships I flew off during The War that I really enjoyed. Meaning the Revealer of Light, the Birhan was amazing. I always thought the Africans were so different from us. But the first day I arrived and met with the ship’s priest, it felt like I was talking with my own grandfather. It seems my reputation preceded me and he wanted me clear on the rules of the ship. It turned out good. I never got caught.
On most worlds I go to, I leave behind an instance of myself, a shard. I perform odd jobs doing anything that keeps me in contact with people and gives me new experiences. The first time I did this was on New Earth, the first time I left. I have been there ever since, and every time I return we share memories. I am a bus driver there, taking people where they need to go, to work or home or play. I love watching people live. I love that job.
According to the Evolutionists, mankind is hundreds of thousands of years old, and we spent that time huddled in caves or wandering the open plains and throwing crap at each other for amusement. Like a millennia-long bachelor party. But man is not alone. There is always woman, nagging at man to go do something important with his life. Is it so easy to believe that we only gave up and listened to them a few thousand years ago? For me, it is not.
Aneerin got a real reputation for getting things done during The War, so everybody sent pilots and ships to fly with him. By the time The War ended, his fleet was the largest Western Alliance fleet, and the only one represented by every single nation of the Alliance. Somehow, we fought the Shang and Chinese more than we fought ourselves. Aneerin was always good at keeping us pointed the right way.
The Ageless are going to change humanity in a way that no other change ever has. It will take hundreds, maybe thousands, of years before it is truly noticeable of course. In the history of mankind, the elders have always died, leaving a new generation to continue on with only their ancestors’ writings or stories to say what they thought. Now, one need simply walk up and ask an elder, and in the future the Ageless will be the oldest of all.
