My parents taught me to follow the law, and to keep a good team of lawyers on call in case you broke it. They were not very concerned with right and wrong. I am not proud of the child I was. You see, right and wrong are not synonymous with legal and illegal. Not everything that is legal is right, and not everything that is illegal is wrong. I learned the truth of that, and the truth has set me free to be a person I am proud to be.
When I was young, I lived in a real easy world. I could do anything I wanted really. I wanted to be famous. I wanted people to say my name with the same awe they have when they say the names of George Washington, Jessie James, or Hank Williams. I wanted to make a name for myself. I loved to play and sing for the pretty girls, but I wasn’t good enough to make it big. I wasn’t famous, but it turns out I didn’t need to be famous to have fun. Then the Shang came.
We should always prepare and be ready for bad things to happen, natural or manmade disasters or worse. A storm, a power failure, an accident; they can all push us into survival mode. But don’t mistake being prepared with being worried. Worrying about tomorrow’s possible troubles doesn’t take them away. It just takes away the peace and joy you could have today. And being prepared means I don’t have to worry about it
As a child, I dressed up and went to a good little boarding school. As a teenager, I had my youthful indiscretions, and my family lawyers made them go away. I was a slave to a life of indulgence. Then the Shang came. I became a free man when I fought them, a wolf hunting the enemies of my pack. After The War, my family didn’t recognize the big bad wolf. They wanted the good little sheep I’d been. So I walked. I am a wolf. I am a free man. I am no one’s prey.
Some people say that Death walks the battlefield to find his prey. I say Death walks in the guise of a randy redhead. And no, I do not mean a redhead named Randy. Sure, the Grim Reaper works on the battlefield, but Death has to find some way to give those old guys who survived the battlefields heart attacks in their beds after all. Least that’s what I figure from my experience. I intend to be the old guy in bed, surrounded by family and friends. Redheads optional.
