The number of protestors attending Trump’s speech and the Capitol Protest on January 6 depends greatly on the politics of the reporter. Left Wing sources report thousands of people attended both. Government estimates I’ve seen report between 30,000 and 80,000 at the speech and 10,000 “on the Capitol grounds.” Right Wing sources report hundreds of thousands at the speech, and tens of thousands marching one hour to attend the Capitol Protest. Less than 300 have been charged with a violent crime. Whatever numbers you believe, the vast majority of the protestors on Jan 6 observed the First Amendment “right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.” But all are called “Insurrectionists” by those who hate them.
Over 1000 Americans have been arrested in the last 3 years on charges related to the January 6 protest and riot. The Feds have promised to arrest another 1000. Many did not enter the capital. Some weren’t even in Washington. Less than 300 were charged with a violent crime. 900 have been convicted or pled guilty, and 64% received prison time. One of the most common charges is violating a law written to target people who shredded subpoenaed evidence. Another common charge was for Parading, Demonstrating, or Picketing in a Capitol Building. Many have been held in a special jail and denied bail and access to lawyers. Many protestors have died. Others have lost their jobs, houses, and families. They attended a permitted protest, and most were non-violent.
Three years ago, President Trump told the crowd to “peacefully and patriotically make your voices heard,” when they went to the permitted Capitol Protest. During Trump’s speech, Ray Epps leaned over to speak to someone who quickly started taking down barricades at the Capitol. Capitol Police fired flash bangs at the crowd. People broke down barriers. People rioted. They broke doors and windows open and entered the Capitol. One was shot in the neck and killed with a firearm, and three died after the police used less-lethal weapons. In other parts of the protest, nobody knew anything odd was going on. Capitol Police held doors open for Protestors, leading them through the Capitol in peace. All of this “seen on video” later released to the public.
Three years ago, as crowds were arriving to protest what they considered an election filled with fraud, a man named Ray Epps told the crowds that they were going to have to enter the Capitol tomorrow. The suspicious crowed chanted “Fed! Fed!” in response, since everybody knows the man in your group telling you to break the law is probably the Fed trying to entrap you into breaking the law so the Feds can arrest you. After the events of Jan 6, he would be quickly added to the FBI’s most wanted list, then taken off it. The FBI has clearly stated that he has never been an FBI source or employee, and the government is now asking for him to be jailed for six months for his conduct.
Three years ago, people were coming to the capital to take part in a permitted protest against what a large percentage of the American population thought was an election filled with fraud and cheating. Intelligence suggested that bad people were going to do bad things at the protest, and Trump approved local law enforcement to be able to call on the National Guard to maintain order and protect both the protestors and the capitol. Capitol Hill said they didn’t need DOD support to maintain order and did not make the call.
