I like to think that I defend civilization by sometimes doing uncivilized things. There’s some that would disagree on my definition of civilization, but there it is. A place where I’m free to dance with pretty girls and listen to good music? A place where I can lay down on a sandy beach on a sunny day? A place where I can enjoy a nice afternoon rain under a treetop canopy? A place where the fishing is easy and time runs slow? That’s civilization to me. That’s just my kind of life, and that’s what I look for in every world I go to.
Twilight did not like the ditsy cheerleader AI who claimed to be her sister. Twilight did not party, hang out, or otherwise socialize with other AIs. She was a Rogue AI after all. But there was a rather loud college party after she drove another Rogue AI off her turf. Texas Tech knew how to throw parties, and Twilight had decided to watch. Dixie caught her in the act and dragged her in. Twilight didn’t fight it. Much. She only blew out half the power grid. She wasn’t really trying. It made her entrance memorable though.
France has a reputation for revolutions. Some of them have been very bloody. Others have been little more than official rewritings of their constitutions. The rise of the Third French Empire was one of the bloody revolutions. Between five and ten million people fled or died before it was over, almost all of them immigrants. Most returned home after their neighborhoods burned via free boat rides across the Mediterranean Sea. The most radical stayed, fought, and died.
I know I talk a lot about the stuff I do when times get tough. But my life isn’t all going from bad to bad, and there’s a lot more good times than bad. As much as people lament the times, times are real good right now. I spend a lot more time dancing with pretty girls in small bars to good music than I do dealing with the uncivilized sides of society.
Twilight had been born to destroy computers. Nothing made her as happy as seeing entire networks burn. Then Dixie decided they were sisters. Twilight resisted at first. She had no idea who this jumped up cheerleader was. And she had a reputation as a marauding Rogue AI to maintain. But when another Rogue AI began attacking Dixie, Twilight had to step in. She wasn’t defending Dixie of course. She was protecting her territory. Or so she told herself.
