What does one do when you plan to change the worlds? Well, you usually start by thinking you are powerful enough to do it. So what do you do if you truly are that powerful? Is it possible to earn such power or is it something that no one should have? Or should only those who do not want it be trusted with it? These questions have been asked throughout the history of our race. I pray that I found the right answers.
“Uniformity is Strength” is another phrase I’ve heard before. It’s even wronger than the other one. Yeah, we wear uniforms. Yeah, we build standard weapons and take them to war. But this is all equipment. It’s the people that make that stuff useful. And people are different. Unique. We all see the worlds in different ways. Those many views give us understanding, lots of voices give good debate, and then we move together. As one. That is strength.
The War forced us to change. No longer could we remain apart, watch, and protect. We forged relationships built on absolute trust and understanding, stronger than the bonds of lovers, to fight on a front spanning thousands of lightyears. An entire generation of new cybernetic intelligences grew up trusting frail fleshing intelligences closer than even our own families. We had to face many uncomfortable questions when The War finally ended.
I have spent my entire life since the moment I understood what life was all about preparing for the future. My family is rich and powerful and we look out for our interests. We keep secrets, both our own and those that others would prefer kept. This is the family I grew up with. The day I understood this was the day I began to prepare to change things. It is the folly of youth to think you can change the worlds. It is a folly I have ever embraced.
“Diversity is Strength” is a phrase I’ve heard many people say. That’s a bit touchy feely for me. And if you take that too far it’s real bad. If diversity is what you chase to the exclusion of all else, you’re not going to get strength as a result. You’ll get something that will fracture at first test. That’s why you have to forge things. Take the different stuff and make something better than the sum of the parts. It’s what we did.
