France has a reputation for revolutions. Some of them have been very bloody. Others have been little more than official rewritings of their constitutions. The rise of the Third French Empire was one of the bloody revolutions. Between five and ten million people fled or died before it was over, almost all of them immigrants. I know I talk a lot about the stuff I do when times get tough. But my life isn’t all going from bad to bad, and there’s a lot more good times than bad. Las Vegas odds were 2 to 1 in favor of France falling altogether. Then Prince Napoleon flew into Charles de Gaulle International Airport, smiled to the cameras, and said that France’s best days were not behind her. It was a masterful performance, recorded for future French school children to see every year on the anniversary of the return of the House of Bonaparte. It was what a desperate people needed to believe.
