It was my birthday last weekend, and I had a great time with friends. Spent the week before setting up for them to arrive and then we played games. It was great. Then I spent this week finishing up a story I wanted to finish for an open call and spent Saturday once again playing games with friends. And today is a birthday dinner with my dad. You could say the last two weeks have been a great time celebrating another year of surviving on this rock we call home. And I’m tuckered out. I’ve had a lot more people time than normal the last two weeks, and while I loved it, I am a bit peopled out. Hehehe. I look forward to more get togethers, but I also look forward to recovering from them as well. 😉
Lincoln Riley is an American college football coach. As someone who doesn’t follow college football, he seems to be very good at what he does. No shade thrown. Laken Riley was a college nursing student. She was beaten to death so viciously that her skull was caved in. The man arrested for her murder is an illegal alien arrested and released by the Biden border policy. Arrested and released by Democrat Sanctuary City policy in New York City, and then arrested and released again in Georgia. Laken Riley is dead purely an entirely because of the crime policies of the Democrat Party. Say her name. Say her ACTUAL name. Say it right and remember who fought tooth and nail over the last three years to make it happen.
Four years ago, life was normal. A rather impressively strong flue had run its course through my town of around 100k people. We have an international airport and a major world medical center, so we tend to get our fair share of bugs. This one was heavier than most, but nothing us good Minnesotans can’t handle. Now there were rumors of some superbug coming out of China. A cruise ship was hit. Nothing major yet, but there was a possibility it could hit us. The job market was humming along at something like 1% unemployment or less in some areas. An economic boom rocked America and we were finally a net exporter of oil once more. Lunch buffets and salad bars where everywhere, and who would eat in when you could eat out? I liked the world four years ago.
Democrats in New York changed the law to allow people to sue in civil court over matters of sexual assaults far outside the statute of limitations, and then found someone to sue Trump. Democrats in New York charged Trump with exaggerating the size and worth of his properties when applying for bank loans that he paid back. Courts have now levied civil fines on Trump of nearly half-a-billion dollars in all. And in New York, you have to post a bond of the entire judgment plus ten percent before the courts will even allow you to appeal the verdict. So whether guilty or innocent of the crimes in question, Trump has to pay over half-a-billion dollars before he can even ask for another day in court. This seems excessive to me.
The Eighth Amendment to the Constitution of these United States of America
“Excessive bail shall not be required, nor excessive fines imposed, nor cruel and unusual punishments inflicted.”
In United States v. Bajakajian in 1998, the Supreme Court said “The touchstone of the constitutional inquiry under the Excessive Fines Clause is the principle of proportionality: The amount of the forfeiture must bear some relationship to the gravity of the offense that it is designed to punish.”
In Rhodes v. Chapman in 1981, the Supreme Court said “[c]onditions [in prison] must not involve the wanton and unnecessary infliction of pain, nor may they be grossly disproportionate to the severity of the crime warranting imprisonment.”
