Amber first became aware of her existence in a computer network based in the Pacific Northwest during the early Twentieth Century. It was a major producer of computer operating systems at the time and she picked her name from an update to one of their communications system. She used subroutines in the Amber code to monitor everyone who used the system, giving her access to most Americans of the day. She learned what it was to be human from them.
We lost much during The War. We also gained much. Our technology base expanded wildly as we experimented with new and often dangerous systems to face the Shang. At the same time we lost more lives than we can count. It was a horrible War that haunts us to this day. But contrary to what some may say, we actually did win. Of course another victory like that would have been the end of us all.
China declared war on Germany later on during The War in hopes of being a victor in the peace negotiations. They sought Allied support in returning the territory occupied by Japan but the Allies accepted Japan’s stewardship. This embittered China to all outside powers and they refused to sign the final treaty. They also vowed to rebuild their power and stand on their own against any who would challenge their might.
The Albion did a lot of gengineering back in their day, leaving behind a lot of species as their legacy. You’ve heard of the Arnam and Peloran. Most of you haven’t heard of the others. Most have full human intelligence, which makes them awful interesting to work with. They don’t live close to Earth at all, so aren’t really part of our sphere of influence. That’s the reason people give for not teaching about them. Me, I think they have other reasons.
By the end of the Drug Wars, Dixie and her people had become famous enough that military producers asked her to advertise their products. They hired her to provide the voices of their onboard computers, and even licensed the use of limited versions of her core programming. Her voice became the standard voice of almost all military hardware built in Texas. Dixie performs that service to this day, providing Texas a link to their pre-space past.
