We often preach about people carrying their cross with them. Sometimes in good ways and sometimes in bad ways. In the good way, it is to remember why the cross was needed in the first place. To remember the fact that we are sinners. Some people do it in a bad way though, in a way where they are displaying the sin almost like it is something to be proud of. That is bad.

This weekend we saw something we haven’t seen in a while. A Catholic Pope carrying a cross. Now, I’m certain that wasn’t a full weight cross. And I’m certain he had help. But it has been a minute since we’ve seen a Pope carrying a cross in public. I’ll give the guy points for that. Yes, it is performative, but I think in this case it is on the good side of performative.

The cross represents sin, and what it can cost. Jesus gave his life on the cross. And if we are carrying our cross to remember that, that is a very good thing.
