My family spread out a fair bit back in the old days. We started in Sweden, but spread out all over. Sometimes through fair trade. Sometimes less fair trade. We settled lands that were not inhabited. Other times we settled lands that WERE inhabited but not fully utilized. One of the more interesting ironies of history is that at one time we settled in a land on the edge of the sea on the main European continent. We were there long enough they named the land after us North Men. It is now called Normandy. A lot of raiders and invaders have come to and from that coast over the centuries. You might say my family has been involved in more than one of them.
My family has had a long history of doing interesting things back in the old days. We are proud Scandinavians and the family tales say we used go a Viking. You might gently call that trading. A more honest description would be trading for anything not nailed down, sometimes without the permission of the previous owners. Sometimes we brought pry bars to take the things that were nailed down. And we often came back home with lovely new brides. The exact nature of the willingness of the new brides was usually overlooked in that era. Some people called us raiders. Pirates. Less charitable terms at times. My family considered ourselves fishers and farmers who could fight. We never gave up on that identity.
I’ve got some good boys and girls on my team. We are stronger together than apart, and that gets us through situations that none of us could do alone. Republic of Texas. United States of America. Western Alliance. Star League. Terran Confederation. I’ve fought for and against more flags than I can count with my boots on. And the team I built, the family I was born into or found, have been with me through every one of them. Every time I walk down the ramp onto a new world, the biggest of big damn heroes in all the worlds come with me. What can I say? Evil doers beware. We’re coming for you.
My family includes far more than the merely biological humans born into it. We have welcomed a lot of cybernetic intelligences over the centuries. They saved our lives, sent us daughter who made our lives better, and we accepted them into our lives. And I’m not the only member of the family who made AIs that woke up in the end. They’re all every bit as much a part of the family as those of us born of a biological mother. We’re one big family crossing the biological and cybernetic lines. Grandma Carter made that clear a long time ago. She was an early adopter of the whole thing, or maybe she got adopted early. Sometimes it’s hard to tell. Either way, we make each other better, and that’s pretty awesome.
The classification levels on some of these dairy entries are pretty crazy, but they want my real thoughts, so here they are. Not sure when anyone’s gonna read some of them. Maybe not until after the time I die and don’t come back. That’s happened to some of us. Enough time goes by, enough things we do, some of us decide we’re not gonna come back the next time something manages to kill us. I’m still coming back because I have people to come back to. Betty. Jasmine. Red. All the game AIs we made when I was a boy. And the rest of my family scattered all over the galaxy. Grandma Carter gives real short shrift to people who up and decide to stop living, and I come by my stubborn streak honestly, doncha know?
